First Amendment Freedom is depended on for the following political opinion piece:
I am watching the burgeoning expanding trade war between Canada and The United States this morning and I am thinking to myself, “Can’t those people understand that these kinds of dealings with each other are pointless and fruitless and all they accomplish is making things harder on everybody who works for a living and it does nothing to enhance friendship or diplomacy between the warring parties. Canada and The United States have been cooperative friends and allies for as long as I can remember and i cannot see any advantage in poking them in the gonads with a fiscal stick …is the world totally nuts or what? So now, because of the trade war, American Consumers and Businesses can look forward to even higher prices on things than ever before and with all the inflation scarring the lives of Americans right now, I do not believe this is the way to go….but somebody bigger and smarter than I am must see something that I cannot see so i just have to wait and to what i can to survive and hope that it all works out well for all of us and for Canada.
As to all the Tarrifs and trade wars and other economic shenanigans, let me say this: I believe everyone in The United States would be far better off financially and in every other way too, if only The United States could become independent of all the trade agreements we have and manufacture and grow everything we need right here on American soil. I do not understand, for the life of me, why manufacturers have to run off to foreign countries in order to make their merchandise and then send it back to the United States for consumers to buy. I, for one, would love to have a chocolate bar made somewhere besides in Mexico or Italy or Germany or Dung Quack Ho….and have it made right here in the United States… possibly even in places like Hershey, Pennsylvania. I will not bitch about cold cereals in a box however, because I have long thought that cereals made in Canada are far better than any domestic products.
You want to now one of the reasons I like Canada so much? It is because when I was up there in Ontario many years ago, even their parking lots at shopping centers were clean as a pin all the time because there were people out there actually scrubbing them down. Do you ever see that happening in The United States? I rather doubt it. Another reason I like Canada is because their Chocolate Easter Bunnies are to die for, and you can have oofs for breakfast. Another reason? You can drive for three or four hours up the Queen’s Highway toward the North and come to a place where you can actually breathe the air and where you are liable not to see another living human being for hours and sometimes even for days at a time. Been there, done that. I actually got naked and took a bath in Lake Superior once and the only observers were a deer, a moose and some birds.
I will say this one thing: If Canada shuts off the electricity to its consumer-customers in The United States,as a retaliatory measure because of the tarrifs, I think an investment in battery manufacturing would be a wise investment at this time and I also think that there would be a burgeoning market in electric and kerosene, and candles. Now is the time for somebody with some imagination to invent a hand-cranked air conditioner that works as well as physically powered medical devices– because if the electric fails, the hospitals had better have reliable back up generators to keep people on life support can make it through the economic turmoil relatively un-phased by it all.
I read where U.S. Cheese and Toilet paper are two of the items caught in the crosshairs of the trade disputes. Well, for one thing, I am suspicious of most cheese, hoping it is not some conglomeration of super-ionized soybeans and a dozen chemicals …and toilet paper? Toilet paper is already insane as it is so I have been working on an idea that may never catch on but i am going to give it a mental workout anyway— and my idea is a toilet paper that can be used on both sides… a little messy perhaps but egregiously inexpensive I would say.
I am told that American Consumer spending has been strong in the most recent quarter of accounting and I am going to make an assumption here … not a fact, mind you, but an assumption. I am assuming that a lot of lower income folks are using their credit credit cards to live on these days … some are probably maxing their cards out …I know the temptation to use plastic for groceries would be strong… I have been subject to that temptation myself on occasion until I got a cold chill in my foreskin when i realized how damned easy it is to just pull that card out and swipe it. I actually got myself Eight Thousand Dollars in debt once doing that shit … I am a lot more conservative with my credit cards now… and I do have a shitload of them and credit out the ass…. but I am a lot wiser now than when I had that Million Dollar credit rating way back in the 70s and 80s.
Well folks, there is news out there that people are dying from measles these days… I remember a long time ago when the measles problems had more or less disappeared (after I had caught and survived most of the popular varieties of the affliction) and it was all because of vaccines. Yes, fiends, the Make America Great Again crowd seems convinced that vaccines and vaccinations are the work of Satan and are doing their best to avoid them and to spread as much misinformation as possible about them ….I wonder how many gravestones over children in cemeteries will be placed because someone refused to have their kids vaccinated? I have had almost every available vaccination there is in America and I have had some of them more than once and I am now 88 years old and still alive and kicking…so I am not afraid of them. I am guessing that sooner or later, some dingbat right winger will come up with the idea that it is dangerous to trust physicians as well as vaccines …and I am sure that will stir the shit on the ever expanding American Scientific Frontier.
A good mix of observations, John, and you are completely right about vaccinations. You will soon be seeing kids contracting Polio again in the US because of RFK and his anti-vaxx cult followers. As for Canada, if I was in charge of that country, I would sever all ties with America completely, and let Trump stew in his own foul juice.
Best wishes, Pete.
